Egypt Foreign Minister and COP President-designate Attends Bonn Climate Change Conference, in Preparation for COP27

Cairo, Egypt: 07 June 2022: The Egyptian delegation led by H.E. Minister Sameh Shoukry, Egypt’s Foreign Minister, and President-designate of the 2022 UN Climate Change Conference (COP27), joined international government delegates, observers, and experts today at the Bonn Climate Change Conference in Germany.

The Bonn Climate Change Conference is an important milestone to prepare for COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, in November, focused on key areas such as mitigation, adaptation, support, financing, and loss and damage. This June session runs from 6 to 16 June 2022.

“The most recent IPCC reports detailed the alarming adverse impacts associated with climate change, and the urgency with which we need to address the climate crisis. As the world is already witnessing recurrent climate-induced events and disasters, there is no doubt that climate change is an existential challenge that the international community, guided by the Convention and Paris Agreement, needs to respond to without any delay,” said H.E. Minister Sameh Shoukry.

“Bonn Climate meetings are back to convene in person for the first time after more than two years, bringing back a spirit of strengthened commitment and resolve. Bonn is an important milestone ahead of COP27, and we are keen to listen attentively to each group, party, and stakeholder,” Minister Shoukry added.

For the first time, a global stocktake on implementation of the Paris Agreement will commence, through a technical dialogue as well as a set of other activities in Bonn. The two-year process, which takes place during a decade of critical climate action, will assess collective progress towards achieving the Paris Agreement’s goal to limit global warming by holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C and pursuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C, in addition to the other goals and objectives on adaptation and means of implementation primarily through finance.

“We need urgent action to implement climate commitments and pledges and continue to scale up the ambition. I look forward to a continued sense of responsibility and unity of purpose towards a COP that Egypt aptly dedicated to implementation,” H.E. Minister Shoukry concluded.

The 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27) to the UN Climate Change Conference 2022 (UNFCCC) will be held in Egypt under the auspices of H.E President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. The conference will build on the previous editions of the Conference of Parties of UNFCCC, will bring governments from across the world together to accelerate global efforts to confront the climate crisis. Egypt’s road to the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference, on behalf of Africa, is set to feature innovative solutions that will help close the action gap this decade.

The UNFCCC COP27 will take place in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt from 7-18 November 2022.
